譚衍嘉的《Memory from the past, nostalgia for the present 》是實驗著”記憶“於相態呈現的作品之一。

Material Mass – Group Exhibition
A group of artists is pleased to present their group exhibition《Material Mass》from July 25 to August 7, 2011. 《Material Mass》- Material Mass is an objective presence that could be perceived by our conscious but exists beyond our conscious.
Seven Hong Kong emerging contemporary artists, Wai Chan, Ann Dan, Clarie Ko, Sally Kwan, Chris Tsang, Edmond Wong & Marco Yao will present their Art works in response to the system in this world, and to explore 'material' or 'mass'.
In Wai Chan’s《Where is my head?》, watercolour is utilized sensitively to express his questions upon the relationship between human and animal. The works hint on self mutilation inside the conscious but at the same time express a chaotic mind. It searches the essence between human mind and the animal nature of human. Figures are dissolved into animal and viewers are posed to such absurd experience.
In Ann Dan’s 《Memory from the past, nostalgia for the present 》, experience of memory is being explored. The work is filled with an aura of time and she sensitively leads the viewers to wander in the past present in the work. Collage and exploration of materials in the work pull the distanced past into the present and share with viewers valuable memories we once share.
In Clarie Ko’s 《Constraints and possibilities》, exploration with signs of systems and chaos represent the change of city in the contemporary era. The works show a sensitive mastering ranging from 2D, 3D and also the textures. Structure and system both revealed infinitive variations inside the paintings. The works also explore the abstract information development and its relationship to the nowadays society.
Sally Kwan’s《Survival》questioned the role and dilemma between “natural v.s. man-made” and “new v.s. old” within the ever-changing city. Drifting among the reality and conscious, we struggle to survive through our every little breath.
Chris Tsang’s Chinese Migrant Workers series come from her own experience living within the Chinese Migrant Workers society and through various interviews with them. She is in search of the life and stories of these workers under such a glorious society but with intense disparity between the rich and the poor.
Edmond Wong’s 《The Forgotten Space》is filled with a melancholic aura of left-over district. When people left, those buildings are like being hollowed. The left-over parts are revealing traces of life, past stories, struggles of living. The parallel life of our modern and spiritual living is also being questioned.
Marco Yao concentrates in exploring the essence of material to convey the idea of “nature vs civilization”. In his installation《Cut》&《PVC Tube》, Yao constructs, cuts and drills upon piles of corrugated papers. The ever-accelerating human consumption of natural resources is changing, reshaping or even destroying the original landscape. It shows the irony between human development and our forgotten past, a valuable natural landscape.
This group of artists will witness the evolution of the contemporary art and will fill the Hong Kong contemporary art scene with new great energy!
